Texas Chapter 1: Port Lavaca

Greetings from Texas!

We are going to "fast forward"  to when the wheels of the coach first touched Texas roads.  The reason for this is that this was back on January 14, and so much has happened with Covid-19 that we can't go back to the way things were at least not just yet.   Please know that we will get through this together.

So let's get started so we can get you caught up on what we are doing NOW!  I think that you'll like that much better.  I know that we will too!  You'll notice that this Blog post is titled, Texas Chapter 1:  Port Lavaca.   A good starting point for our adventures through the Lone Star State.

After leaving Louisiana and driving through pretty much rain the whole time, we arrived at a Visitor's Center in Orange, Texas with quite the dirty coach and Jeep.  It was a quick visit because of more rain coming, so we collected literature, used the facilities and continued on our way as we pretty much had about 130 miles to travel - around Houston to boot - before we could say that we were near the center point of the Texas Gulf Coast and Port Lavaca and Magnolia Beach.

Road Construction on the Tollway going around Houston.  What a mess!

We drove into the beach area near the water and found a place to park.  There weren't too many people at this time which would have been around mid-January.

Our new neighbors, Carolyn & LaVern from Iowa ~

The days that began were actually very nice.  Plenty of ships passing, somewhat warm days, and the sunsets were pretty special.

What we didn't know was that the weather was going to turn ugly with rain and more rain, wind and that "chill" in the air.  Jeff at one point was the lifesaver for other people's mats that were floating away, and then the next day trying to create a drainage in the beach to get some of the water away from us.

On the dry days we did enjoy walks and at the suggestion of our neighbor, LaVern, visited a RV repair shop to take care of a few minor items.  One which was some very welcomed, new Atwood range grates for our kitchen.  We almost had to take out a loan to purchase these as the prices have really skyrocketed - with the same type of "inferior" quality that we have previously experienced.  What's wrong with these manufacturers???!!!!

Kay's happy now!
We were able to try out some restaurant recommendations for good pizza (ordered twice!), awesome Mexican and a very unique visit for a Sunday's all you can eat turkey, fried chicken and much more at the Hotel Blessing - in where else - Blessing, Texas!

This very unique coffee shop with consists of a big room with about 10 tables of various types and size.  Against the back wall there are two old wood stoves covered with pots and pans full of steaming vittles of every description.  A very unique place to talk to people and have a most interesting experience.

We do believe that it's time to be on the road heading south to our reservation in Los Fresnos.  We're hoping that the weather is warmer.
